Who is planning to attend the annual Midwest Yoga Conference June3-6 at Indian Lakes Resort in Bloomington, Illinois? Three of my Alton yoga students and I went last year and we enjoyed every minute of it. Wonderful acomodations and great workshops and speakers. It's so driveable, somewhat reasonable(?), and happens during our best spring weather. Due to another commitment, I won't be going this year, but 2 from my group are. Who else? If you plan to attend how about sharing some highlights of your experiences on our website. We'd love to hear from you!  Valerie White

For more info about the conference go to midwestyoga.com

It's time to take action.

On behalf of Spirit of Yoga-St Louis, we urge your support of State Senate Bill No. 726, sponsored by Senator Joan Bray, which specifically exempts retail sales tax on Yoga, Tai Chi, Qi Gong instruction.

We realize that the state may be desperate for funds, but we cannot agree with their characterization that yoga studios are "places of amusement, entertainment, or recreation" that are subject to sales tax. We feel that this bill will legislatively remedy the disparity that allows exemptions for those teachers who do not teach in "places of amusement, entertainment, or recreation."

Make yourself heard. Send some mail.

Studio owners- help by taking the following six steps here.

The Missouri State Department of Revenue has informed yoga studios they must begin collecting sales tax on their classes. This went into effect on November 1, 2009. Most area studios will collect the tax but it will be done under protest.  Read what's in the news:

"Bray introduces bill to exempt yoga from Mo. tax" from the St Louis Post-Dispatch on January 12, 2010

Los Angeles Times article "Missouri's yoga enthusiasts go to the mat over sales tax" from December 18, 2009.

Before we delve into why one should be spiritual, we should understand what is meant by being spiritual. Spirituality means different things to different people. For someone it means becoming more religious (religion implying worship of "God" and the teachings of their accepted faith).

Using Yoga to RelaxOne thing which is gaining increasing popularity is yoga. Especially in this time of economic uncertainty where people are losing their jobs left and right, yoga and meditation are things that are becoming more common. Not only is yoga relaxing, but it helps to relieve stress that people feel and accumulate throughout the day. If you have never tried yoga, make sure that you do your research. The reasons that people choose to do yoga vary from person to person, and there are different levels of yoga classes out there.

Yoga is primarily a practice that has been handed down in the oral tradition from guru to sisya, teacher to student, since time immemorial. In India it has never been viewed as anything less than a sacred practice. "Yoga practice guides the mind towards its source, the core of being, or the soul (atman)," teaches yoga master B.K.S. Iyengar.

Yoga has an extremely long history; over 6,000 years in fact! This ancient form of exercise is great for conditioning the body and the mind alike. While the various asanas or postures are the core of yoga, the breath is its soul. It's been said that if you can breathe, you can practice yoga. A fundamental aim of yoga is to help you learn to calm your mind through your breathing.
